Parking area at Liberia Airport to be expanded - Tuesday, May 20, 2008

(Infocom) - Five new spaces for airplane parking will be built at Liberia’s Daniel Oduber International Airport.

These five new spots will bring to 12 the available parking spaces at the Guanacastecan airport, which are expected to make its platform capable of attending the 200 monthly flights that this terminal receives.

The work on the parking platform for airplanes will cost $6.6 million, and it will built with funds from the Civil Aviation Technical Council (CTAC).   The project consists of resurfacing around 34,000 square meters with hydraulic concrete, in addition to constructing a land-equipment platform of 1,800 square meters — where the implements to service the aircraft will be placed.

Additionally, the works include a storm-water drainage system, improvement of the existing surface for parking of airplanes, and the placing of a lighting system adequate for this sector of the airport.

In charge of construction will be Quebradores Pedregal, and the works will most likely take place during the second semester of this year, with the goal of having the new infrastructure ready before the beginning of the next high tourism season in December.

This project is part of a program for expanding infrastructure at the airport, which in its next stage will include the construction of a new passenger terminal that will help prevent saturation during peak travel days.

The influx of tourist in this airport continues to grow, reason for which airlines have increased the frequency of their flights and added new destinations. Officials expects a boost of 9.7 percent in the number of visitors Daniel Oduber will receive this year — a sizable number that will be nonetheless lower than the 15 percent increase experienced last year by the Liberia terminal.
